Why Businesses With Fewer Reviews Can Outrank Their Competitors
Reviews matter, but they're one signal among several. A business with half your reviews can still rank above you.

Reviews are part of prominence, not all of it
Google says review count and rating factor into local ranking as part of prominence. But relevance and distance are separate factors — and a closer, more relevant business can outrank a better-reviewed one.
Common reasons
- They're closer to the person searching
- Their primary category matches the search more precisely
- They list the exact service being searched
- Their reviews are more recent, even if fewer
- Their website has a dedicated page for the service
What to do about it
Keep earning reviews steadily and ethically, but also fix category, service and website gaps. Review volume alone rarely closes the distance.
